From left: Amanda Button, Moraene Roberts, and Thomas Mayes In March, 2019, three ATD Fourth World members talked about how their experience of poverty forged their roles as activists. Below they describe why they value ATD’s approach, and what they see as key steps forward.  Sadly, Moraene Roberts passed away in January, 2020. Her memory continues to inspire all who knew her. Moraene Roberts: The first step, before becoming an activist, is recognising yourself as part of a community in poverty, part of the ATD Fourth World community. When I first came here, I didn’t think of myself as being “in poverty”.…

In the run-up to Elections 2020 ATD Ireland was delighted to help the Community Platform develop a values based manifesto and materials to promote it. The values are Community, Participation and Decency and must be put to the forefront in Elections 2020. Electing people who will deliver on these values on the 8th February will help achieve the type of inclusive society we all want to live in. Below is the Election 2020 Manifesto and a Public Leaflet with questions people can ask candidates who knock on your door. You can also view the MyValuesMyVote video and follow the Community Platform twitter @CommunityP_IRL and website communtyplatform.ie. The…

"What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future." We hope you all enjoyed a blessed festive season. There was a great Christmas spirit in the office for the last while before our holidays, where we had been practicing our seasonal songs before our annual carol fundraiser on Grafton Street on December 10th. We would like to sincerely thank all our friends and allies who lent us their voice for a fun and frosty evening.Whilst we may not be winning any awards for our singing abilities, our cheery presence was felt by the many passers by who…

17 October – Dublin Event

As always on the 17th of October, ATD alongside the 17 October committee launched our annual event at the Human Rights and Poverty Stone, Dublin, to mark the UN International Eradication of Poverty Day. This years chosen international theme was “Acting together to empower children, their families and communities to end poverty”. In relation to this, we chose a sub-theme of ‘footsteps for a better future’ and so we placed hundreds of colored footprints of peoples dreams (many of those written by children) that we had collected over the past months as well as on the day, from the famine statues to the…

Cycle for SDG’s

A fantastic adventure organised by ATD Quart Monde! 475km from Dublin to Paris over 6 days as part of the international week of action and awareness for the Sustainable Development Goals (#Act4SDGs). A team of eight Irish cyclists took the boat from Dublin Port to Cherbourg and were joined by a number of French cyclists, including some local authorities, along the way. The purpose of the trip was to raise awareness for SDGs Week, to highlight the strong alliance between Ireland and France in SDG implementation, and to promote France's recent adoption of a new Roadmap for the 2030 Agenda. The route…
