Christmas appeal

Dear friends of ATD Ireland,

Thank you very much for your ongoing support and engagement with our work. It is greatly appreciated. This Christmas, we would like to ask you to please consider donating on a one- time or monthly basis to support our work alongside families and individuals struggling with poverty. ATD Ireland continue to work to support people enduring the worst effects of poverty and socio- economic discrimination.

Creative projects such as Lockdown Liberties give people living in poverty an outlet to express their experiences

The underlying goals of ATD Ireland are to offer people a platform for their voice to be heard, build bridges across different sections of society and ensure people living in poverty a seat at the table of policy and decision making.

Most importantly we support people through the difficulties of living in poverty through a holistic and person-centred way, recognising the diverse nature of how poverty can be experienced.

Your kind donations would support our creative workshops, art materials, cultural and nature outings…

Read below about some of our recent and ongoing projects;

Family support: We take weekly visits to family homes, hostels and disadvantaged areas take place weekly for a catch-up and a chance to discuss some personal issues and offer support if needs be.  There are multiple aims of support; to offer company, to help our members get through times of crisis, to offer support in enabling people to pursue their goals and aspirations and to help people develop their skills, confidence and knowledge.  Family support can also include providing character references, accompanying families to court or acting as a liaison with social workers.  Recently we have begun going on visits to scenic and cultural areas.  This importance of family support and outings is to combat marginalisation and isolation often experienced by those living in poverty.

Chooseday- Tuesdays:

We are currently having an open office day every Tuesday 11- 3 pm.  Each week we will do a different free and fun activity together such as art & DIY, cooking, nature walks, singing, cultural outings, etc.

We also provide some lunch and a safe community space for nice chats to happen over a cuppa.

#Addthe10: ATD Ireland are part of an alliance called #addthe10th.  The purpose of this group is to have socio- economic status recognized as the tenth ground of discrimination in Irish equality legislation, namely the Equal Status Act and the Employment Equality Act.  Learn more here.

Leave No One Behind Series 3: The ‘Leave No One Behind Conversations’ is an ATD Ireland project supported by Concern Worldwide. It is a workshop series designed to start an inclusive conversation about the 2030 Agenda’s Leave No One Behind Promise.  We recently published the summary report from our LNOB series 2- read here.  Series 3 draws on the conclusions from Series 2 which emphasised the link between SDG 1 and 3 No Poverty and Health and Wellbeing.  We will be highlighting positive actions are around the country which aim to support people’s physical and mental health.

Poverty aware practice: Following on from the development of our Hidden Dimensions of Poverty educational resource app, ATD Ireland have also developed a ‘Poverty Aware Practice’ module in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin.  We hope to continue to bring this to other students and practising social workers.  See the recent film here.

Events, workshops and gatherings are a necessity to make meaningful connections with people and to gain wisdom from those living in poverty. We strive to create non- judgemental spaces where people can share their stories, learn from one another and become part of a community where they feel their experiences are understood.

“Built on the conviction that those most left behind are vital is the source of all energy and effort that ATD puts into putting them in contact with people with similar experiences. Many people feel alone and guilty for what they’re going through, and bringing them into contact with people from other walks of life, and among others, people who are in a position to change the way our societies work, is so important.”
