Emma- Active Citizenship

The environment and community at ATD Ireland is unlike any I have experienced before. Coming from America for my study abroad and internship semester, I did not know what to expect. I was lucky enough to be placed with an organization that brings together so many people from all walks of life. It is inspiring to see people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds come together to work towards one common goal. No matter how different we may all be, we all share the same values and beliefs when it comes to humanity, and the treatment of people living in poverty. I personally have learned so much from everyone involved in ATD. I have been able to speak with members of the community first hand about their lived experience, and what makes ATD so special is that these people are the ones leading the charge. No one knows what change is needed more than those who have lived it themselves, and these community members provide priceless knowledge. The workspace is extremely collaborative, everyone’s voice is heard and everybody has something to say and contribute. Everyone is equal, and everyone is involved, the space definitely creates active citizenship. I have been able to learn about different cultures, and learn from people who have devoted their lives to this cause. Even though I am much younger and have much less experience, the members of the ATD community still strive to learn from me just as I am able to learn from them. It truly is a special and united community that I am lucky to be immersed within.
